Mattersey Rifle & Pistol Club

(Incorporating Worksop Small-bore Rifle Club)

A Brief History

Mattersey Rifle & Pistol Club was formed in 1979 from a few breakaway shooters from Worksop Rifle Club, the driving force and Secretary was Gordon Hanstock who sadly died in 1994.

Gordon was acquainted with the quarry owners and secured a licence to shoot at a peppercorn rent which continued through changes of ownership until Tarmac bought the site. Some of the original members are still active within the club.

During the 80's and early 90's we had quite a few members compete in Police Pistol and Bianchi shoots at both national and international level. The club had the national champion more than once.

Currently we have some excellent blackpowder riflemen who compete at national and international shoots with modest success.

The ranges have been developed over the years to encourage the skills of the members wherever possible, although we continued to have in our midst those who could not hit a cow on the arse with a banjo, we keep on trying!

During 1995 we took in the remnant of the Worksop Club with their trophies and a few members. The Club Constitution was amended so that their name was not lost.

We have come a long way from the first covered firing point, earth floor and corrugated roof at 20yds fixed targets.
